Three steps, and a real person at every one.
Invitations exist because they are the cheapest possible abuse control. A referral chain is worth more than any signup CAPTCHA.

Someone vouches for you
An existing member refers you from inside their account. There is no public queue to join and no way to buy your way forward.

We check there is room
Mailboxes are added only when the service has headroom. When it does not, referrals are held rather than refused.

Your mailbox is created
You choose the address. Setup details go back through the person who referred you.
